I hate to be the bear of bad news but doing crunches and sit-ups are the LEAST effective method of getting ripped abs. You want to do exercises that will accelerate fat loss around the middle, and doing sit-ups, and crunches will not accomplish that.

What you must do is do exercises that engages the abs indirectly but still burn fat in the middle. Here's the three keys to ripped abs:

1. Do resistance training (stop doing abdominal workouts like crunches. instead do snatches, cable pulls, lunges and burpees) those exercises penetrate the abdominal wall indirectly. so, you'll be burning some serious stomach fat as well as getting toned all over your body.

2. interval training (This method is by far the best way to recruit fat loss around the middle) do short burst exercises instead of long, steady pace cardio.

3. Eat natural, whole foods instead of processed (refined) carbs. Stay away from anything that's in a box, bag, or can. they are usually loaded with sugar.

A successful ab workout is one that incorporates a well thought out diet using a 60/40 ratio (60 % protein to 40% carbs), cardio such as jogging, running stairs, jump roping (using a good heavy rope, not some cheap light one), a core selection of ab exercises to perform and a lot of focus and determination. Good exercises are: bicycle crunches, ab crunch on a exercise ball, side oblique twists with a medicine ball, reverse crunches. All of these can be found on the internet to see how they're performed. Smaller meals through out the day that keep your body fueled is much better than a few larger meals. Less chance of over eating this way. Keeping a strict movement during the exercise with less reps is more important than the quantity to maximize results.
References :
Experience.

doing abwork is only half of what you need to be doing. that will get you the muscle, but if there's a layer of fat covering it, you won't be able to see how much muscle you have. make sure you do cardio to help get rid of the fat. that way you can see your abs better!!
also, the best ab workouts are things that work more than one area of your abs. try a google search for these exercises if you don't know what they are:
-bicycle crunch
-double crunch
-plank

good luck! :)
